continental shelf
a SHALLOW area of sediment near the shore. The submerged border of a continent.

continental slope
the STEEP DROP of the seabed from the continental shelf to the abyssal zone. Connects the continental shelf to the ocean floor.

continental rise
a HILL of sediment at the base (end) of the continental slope.

abyssal plain
the FLAT deep ocean floor. Made of thick layers of sediment.

mid-ocean ridge
a chain of VOLCANOES on the ocean floor at a divergent boundary.

trench
a deep, steep-sided CANYON in the ocean floor. The DEEPEST parts of the ocean floor with the most pressure, coldest temperatures and least number of organisms.

ocean floor
bottom of the ocean; covered in mountains and valleys, plains and ridges just like land.

sonar
technology that uses sound waves. Scientists use this to map and "see" the ocean floor.

sediment
small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks that settle at the bottom
