Map
Any concrete or abstract representation of the features that occur near the surface of the earth or other celestial bodies.
Mental Maps
Maps based on direct experience and personal perceptions; may not be useful for locational accuracy.
Real Maps / Cartographic Maps
Actual, physical map products that provide a graphic representation of the environment.
Features of Maps
Functions of Maps
Reference Library Function
Enables users to see the position/location of geographical features and estimate distances between them.
Essay Function of Maps
Indicates a specific feature or theme and focuses on geographical distribution rather than location.
Navigation Maps
Assist users in land, water, and air navigation, such as road maps and nautical charts.
Persuasive Maps
Use visual techniques to influence opinions, such as disproportionate symbols or simplification.
Common Elements of Maps
Includes title, legends, neatline, scale, orientation, and insets.
Title of a Map
Shows the purpose for which the map was prepared and states the subject.
Legend
Indicates map symbols along with explanations of their meanings.
Scale
Ratio between the size of features on the map and the size of features on the ground.
Orientation
Describes how a map is aligned relative to the earth’s surface, typically indicated by a north arrow.
Insets
Small additional maps included within the main map to provide further context.
Graphical Scale
A visual representation of the map’s scale, showing distances directly.
Numeric Scale
A numerical expression of the relationship between map size and actual distance.
