trapezius
large, triangular muscle in upper back. runs horizontally from base of skull to shoulder. fibers organized in 3 groups (upper, middle, lower)
rotate scapula
overall function of trapezius
raising scapula/shoulder (shrugging)
function of upper trapezius
pull scapula toward vertebrae
function of middle trapezius
draw scapula/shoulder downward
function of lower trapezius
pull head backward or to one side
function of trapezius when other muscles fix shoulder in position
rhomboideous major
connects vertebral column to scapula
retract (squeeze back) and elevate scapula, rotate scapula downward
function of rhomboideus major
levator scapulae
straplike muscle, runs vertically through neck, connecting cervical vertebrae to scapulae
elevates scapula
function of levator scapulae
splenius capitis
broad straplike muscle, back of the neck, connects base of skull to cervical vertebrae and upper thorax
rotates head to opposite side, flexes neck
function of one splenius capitis
brings head to upright position
function of two splenius capitis
teres major
connects scapula to humerus
extension of shoulder (move arm back and upward). adduct and rotate arm medially
function of teres major
latissimus dorsi
wide, triangular muscle, curves upward from lower back around the side to the armpit
extend shoulder and adduct arm, rotate humerus medially, pull shoulder down and back. pull arm back in swimming, climbing, and rowing
function of latissimus dorsi
supraspinatus
in the depression above the spine of the scapula on posterior surface, connects scapula to greater tubercle of humerus
abducts the arm (moves it away from the midline)
function of supraspinatus
infraspinatus
in depression below the spine of the scapula on posterior surface. attaches scapula to humerus
rotate arm laterally
function of infraspinatus
deltoid
thick, triangular muscle that covers shoulder joint. connects clavicle and scapula to lateral side of humerus
abducts the arm, posterior fibers extend shoulder and anterior fibers flex shoulder
function of deltoid
pectoralis major
thick, fan shaped muscle in upper chest. fibers run from center of thorax through armpit to humerus
pulls arm forward and across chest, rotate humerus medially and adduct the arm from a raised position, flexion of shoulder (raise arm upward above head)
function of pectoralis major
pectoralis minor
thin flat muscle that lies beneath the pectoralis major. runs laterally and upward from ribs to scapula
pulls scapula forward and downward
function of pectoralis minor
raise ribs and aid in forceful inhalation
function of pectoralis minor when other muscles fix scapula in position
broad, thin sheet of muscle, fibers slant downward from lower ribs to pelvic girdle
external oblique
when contracted, tenses abdominal wall and compresses contents of abdominal cavity. flexes and rotates vertebral column
function of external oblique
internal oblique
broad thin sheet of muscle beneath external oblique. fibers run up and forward from pelvic girdle to lower ribs (basically opposite direction of external oblique)
When contracted, tenses abdominal wall and compresses contents of abdominal cavity, flexes and rotates vertebral column
function of internal oblique (hint: same as external oblique)
rectus abdominis
long, straplike muscles that connect pubis bones to the ribs and sternum
compresses contents of abdominal cavity, flexes vertebral column
function of rectus abdominis
transversus abdominis
forms third layer of muscle beneath external/internal obliques. fibers run horizontally from lower ribs/lumbar vertebrae and ilium to the pubic bones
when contracted, tenses abdominal wall and compresses contents of abdominal cavity. flexes and rotates vertebral column
function of transversus abdominis
serratus anterior
broad curved muscle located on side of chest
protracts and rotates scapula, used to thrust the shoulder forward (like when pushing something)
function of serratus anterior
serratus posterior
on the top of the back and the middle/lumbar region. kind of on the ribs. has a superior and inferior portion
elevate or depress the ribs, aiding in deep inhalation and forced exhalation
function of serratus posterior
