Atlantic Slave Trade
The trade of goods across the Atlantic, significant for the economy and social structure of the colonies.
Mercantilism
Economic theory that colonies should benefit the wealth of the mother country.
Writ of Assistance
Legal document allowing officials to search any premises for smuggled goods.
First Continental Congress
A meeting in 1774 to address colonial grievances, leading up to the American Revolution.
American Revolution
The conflict from 1775 to 1783 in which the 13 colonies won independence from Britain.
Saratoga
A pivotal battle in 1777 that resulted in a major American victory and gained French support.
Articles of Confederation
The first constitution of the United States, adopted in 1781, creating a loose confederation.
Shays' Rebellion
An armed uprising in 1786-1787 to protest economic injustices and the lack of government response.
Federalism
The division of power between national and state governments.

An agreement during the Constitutional Convention that allowed enslaved people to be counted as three-fifths of a person for representation.
Federalist Papers
A series of essays advocating for the ratification of the Constitution, written by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay.
Great Compromise
The agreement to create a bicameral legislature with representation based on population in one house and equal representation in the other.
Tea Act of 1773
Law that allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies, undermining local merchants.
Quartering Act
A law requiring colonists to provide housing and supplies to British troops.
Monroe Doctrine
A U.S policy, formulated in 1823, warning European nations against colonization in the Americas.
Missouri Compromise
1820 agreement that allowed Missouri to enter the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
Emancipation Proclamation
An executive order by President Abraham Lincoln freeing enslaved people in the Confederate states.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
A law aimed at eliminating various forms of voting discrimination, especially in the South.
New Deal
A series of programs and reforms implemented by FDR in response to the Great Depression.
G.I. Bill
Legislation providing various benefits to returning World War II veterans, including education and housing.
