The term “cardiovascular” is a combination of two words
“Cardio” derived from “cardiac”- meaning heart & “vascular” means blood vessels. The name itself means system of heart & blood vessels.
Cardiovascular System
Is a system of heart & blood vessels of the human body. Also known as Circulatory System
3 Major Components of the Cardiovascular system
Heart, Blood vessels, & blood
Heart
Hollow muscular organ made of strong cardiac muscles. Can push through circulatory system w/ great force. Push of the heart is the major force that causes circulation of blood throughout the human body.
3 layers of the Heart
Pericardium, Myocardium, & Endocardium
Bubble Study
To see how the heart is pumping
Blood Vessels
Human Beings have a closed type of circulatory system. In which blood doesnt come in direct connect w/ body tissues. Instead the blood flows in restricted pathways. Materials are exchanged between blood and body tissues through the walls of it. Blood vessels are pathways of blood flow in the human body.
3 main types of blood vessels
Arteries, veins and capillaries
Blood
Is a specialized tissue of body that exists in fluid form. It is one of the five basic types of tissue of the human body.
Blood consists of 2 major portions
Blood cells & plasma
Plasma
Is a watery portion of blood that makes it a fluid. It’s 90% of blood & remaining 10% are proteins, inclusions & waste products etc.
Blood Cells are 3 main types
RBC’s, WBC’s & Platelets
Importance of Cardiovascular system
It’s so important, if it stops for a minute rapid death will occur. Flow of blood is necessary for existence. Flow of blood stops LIFE WILL STOP.
Heart
Main organ & is responsible for distributing blood all over the human body. Hollow muscular organ providing the force for flow of blood through the human body.
Blood vessels
Pathways of blood flow in the human body, hollow tubes of 3 types
Arteries
Carry blood AWAY from the HEART to other body parts, very muscular and elastic
Capillaries
Microscopic blood vessels where exchange of nutrients w/tissues take place
Veins
Carry blood TOWARDS the HEART from other body parts, their walls are thinner as compared to corresponding arteries.
Leading cause of death in the US
Heart disease
Blood
Speacial type of body tissue that is in fluid form, consists of the following componets: Plasma & Blood cells (WBC’s,RBC’s, & Platelets)
Cardiovascular function
Provide nutrients to the body parts, remove excretory products from body parts, protects body from infection & distribution of heat.
Vascular Ultrasound
Is a general term for a non-invasive painless test that uses high frequency sound waves to image blood vessels including arteries & veins
Arterial & Venous Duplex Ultrasound of the Abdomen
Examines blood vessels & blood flow in the abdominal area. Important to diagnose (AAA) Abdominal Aorta Aneurysum.
Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
Looks at carotid artery in the neck. What feeds the brain (see that with stroke)
Duplex Ultrasound of extremities
Looks at arms or legs typically used to diagnose peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or Blood clots
Renal Duplex Ultrasound
Examines the kidneys & their blood vessels
