corpus callosum
A distinctive C-shaped region of fiber tracts that connects the left and right hemispheres.
diencephalon
The central interior region of the brain that contains the thalamus, epithalamus, and hypothalamus.
thalamus
A rounded structure located roughly between the corpus callosum and the optic chiasm.
epithalamus
The superior region of the diencephalon, just above the thalamus.
hypothalamus
The region just inferior to the thalamus, with a stalk extending to the pituitary gland.
pineal gland
A small, dark structure located posterior to the thalamus.
medulla oblongata
The largest and most posterior portion of the brain stem, continuous with the spinal cord.
pons
A small protrusion or bump anterior to the medulla oblongata.
midbrain
The area located between the pons and the diencephalon.
lateral ventricle
The space inferior to the corpus callosum.
third ventricle
A space between the corpus callosum and the thalamus.
