Statins
Ex. Atorvastatin
Action: Lowers LDLs
Beta Adrenergic Blockers
Ex. Metoprolol, propranolol
Action: Blocks sympathetic impulses to heart + blood vessels; Decreases HR and CO
Used for prevention of angina (stable)
Nitrates
Action: Relaxes smooth muscle; Vasodilation
Considerations: Contraindications in pts w hypersensitivity, head trauma, + cerebral hemorrhage; IV contraindications in pts w hypotension + hypovolemia; Interacts w alcohol, beta + calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, PDE-5 inhibitors - sildenafil (Viagra)
Administration: Do NOT crush, break, or chew
Nursing Interventions: Instruct pt to move slowly to minimize effects of orthostatic hypotension
