Organic Synthesis
The process of synthesizing organic compounds from simpler starting materials through a series of reactions.
Synthetic Route
A step-by-step procedure employed to convert starting materials into a target compound, often involving multiple reactions.
Percentage Yield
The ratio of the actual yield of a product to the theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage.
Reflux
A technique used to heat a reaction mixture while preventing the loss of volatile components, allowing them to condense back into the liquid.
Distillation
A purification process that separates components of a mixture based on differences in their boiling points.
Esterification
A chemical reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid to form an ester and water.
Intermediate Compound
A substance formed during the conversion of reactants to products in a multi-step synthesis that is not the final product.
Alkaline Hydrolysis
A chemical reaction that involves the breakdown of an ester into an alcohol and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a base.
Reagents and Conditions
The specific chemicals (reagents) and the physical circumstances (conditions) required for a chemical reaction to occur.
Suction Filtration
A method of filtering a liquid to separate solid impurities, using reduced pressure to draw the liquid through the filter.
Fractional Distillation
A variant of distillation that separates a mixture into its individual components or fractions based on their boiling points.
Condensed Phase
The state of matter in which molecules are closely packed together, typically in liquids or solids, as opposed to gases.
Anhydrous Calcium Chloride
A drying agent used to remove traces of moisture from organic solutions.
Carboxylic Acid
A type of organic acid that contains a carboxyl group (-COOH) and can be converted to esters.
Haloalkane
An alkane in which one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by halogen atoms.
Alkene
A type of unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains at least one carbon-carbon double bond.
