I have come to the borders of sleep,
The unfathomable deep
Forest
- ‘borders’ crossing over and starting to lose way, death bed
- ‘unfathomable’ can’t quite grasp, bottomless void
- ‘forest’ introducing the start of an extended metaphor throughout, not threatening but enchanting
where all must lose
Their way, however straight,
Or winding
- ‘must lose their way’ inevitable fate we all have to succumb,
- ‘straight, or winding’ however you enter it is always to same place
Deceived the travellers
- ‘deceived’ those who try to out wit are tricked by fate, personifying path- malicious
- ‘sink’ LINK to ‘unfathomable’ both bottomless voids
Here love ends,
Despair, ambition ends
- ‘love ends’ is the ultimate human emotion joy + pain, end of path and pit because end of emotions
- ‘despair, ambition’ oxymoron- range of emotions lost— hyperbolic emotions clear this is death not sleep
sleep that is sweeter
Than tasks most noble
- ‘tasks most noble’ done all you can in war— accepting death is more brave than the actual fight`
- ‘s’ sibilance alliteration ‘shhhh’ tempting reader to sleep
the silence I hear and obey
- ‘silence I hear’ paradoxical, comes from within
That I may lose my way
And myself
- ‘lose my way’ symbolic, emotions, memories, loved ones lost to death= prepared to let go and release himself to sleep
- ‘And myself.’ Two word line, already lost at the end of stanza- abrupt ending = abrupt death?
