Exposition
The stories setting, mood, the main character, supporting characters and time. The characters development happens during this part of the story.
Inciting incident
Problem, crisis, challenge, dilemma, or obstacle present to the main character that gets the story going (conflict)
Rising action
Complications that the main character encounters while trying to resolve the conflict. It is all events leading to the turning points of the story.
Climax
The peak of excitement, the moment where the story changes and when the problem is resolved
Falling action
All plot points wrapping up, the consequences of the climax, and reflection on the changes of the changes in the main character
Resolution
The plots end. The resolution might tie up loose ends or leave important parts of the story unresolved
Theme in a story
In a story it’s the underlying message. It's the “so what” of the text or in other words it's the critical belief about what the author is trying to convey.
What is NOT theme
Plot summary, reference to any character in the text, specific to one person, author or character, single word (full sentence phrase)
Theme
Theme is the central idea or message within a story; the beliefs about life the author is trying to convey; the lesson or moral of the story.
Big idea
The big idea is usually the topic and subject (usually 1-5 words) whereas for theme it's usually the opinion about the topic or subject.
Protagonist
The driver of the action of the story; usually main character
Antagonist
The character that stands in opposition to the protagonist, but it's not always the “bad guy”
Foil
A foil is a character that contrast another character in a way that illuminates a trait or the personality. What are foil is a protagonist is not. EX: the ____ of character, one highlights the ____ of character two
Round
A fully developed character in terms of personality, multifaced plus described in detail
Dynamic
A dynamic character evolves through throughout the story they are affected by the events of the story
Static
Stays the same throughout the story, they are not affected by the plot
Internal
Occurs within a character, such as: do right or wrong
External
Involves the character who struggles against a force outside themselves such as: nature object, another character
