What is the significance of Jesus’ first time appearing to the disciples? What happens in the story? What does it mean for the early Church?
The significance of Jesus first appearance to the disciples lies in the revelation of his glorified resurrected body. The Apostles gathered in the Upper Room when Jesus miraculously entered through locked doors to see them. For the early Church, this moment marks the point at which the Apostles receive divine authority to forgive sins and carry on Jesus’ work. By acting as vessels for God’s power and healing.
Explain the Pentecost story. (When, where, what, significance)
In Jerusalem, 50 days after Jesus resurrected, the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and able to speak different languages. This is a reversal of the Tower of Babel story and is symbolic of the Church’s universal mission.
Explain the visions that sparked the Church's welcoming of the Gentiles
Cornelius’ vision: An Angel tells Cornelius (a Gentile Christian) that his prayers and almsgiving have been received, and that he should find Peter.
Peter’s vision: A sheet comes down with “unclean” animals on it and a voice saying “slaughter and eat… what God has made clean, you are not to call profane.”
Peter did not understand the vision until Cornelius came to him. Peter realizes that the vision is not just about food, but about the people of God. God saves all people, not just the Jewish people.
