The stranger/narrator/tenderfoot
A young man from the east who attends Harvard university. Very naive and loose lipped, lacking most cowboy skills. Acts as a stand in for the audience/reader in expriencing the western world. Unaware of the rules and life and whats going on in the Virginians life
the Virginian
The main character that we follow throughout the book. A young man with long black hair with an odd accent unlike the rest of the cowboys. Story centers around him as the protagonist. Marries molly. Hangs Steve and Ed. Marries Molly after killing Trampas and gets to run their own ranch/coal mine and have a few kids
Uncle Hughey
An older man with a tendency to be left/leave others behind at the alter. He introduces the readers to the strangeness of the western world. Currently on his way to catch a train to the east and get married, having a wife and twins afterwards
Steve
A friend of the Virginian. Showing how the Virginian getting along with people and isn't all tough and serious. later parts ways with Steve as he starts stealing and selling cattle. gets caught stealing/killing cattle and is Lynched for it by the Virginian
The ¾ drummers
One dutch, two jew, and one german. Travellers selling jews and smokes as they travel through the west. A few sharing a bed with the Virginian and tenderfoot in Medicine Bow. Gets the whole town riled up at the start.
Mrs. Glen
The woman who runs the eating house + sleep house in Medicine Bowl which the main character stay at. One of the drummers tries hitting on her but gets rejected. Kind but minds her own business
Trampas
A cowboy that doesn't like the Virginian and serves as the antagonists. Meet at medicine hat playing poker. Constantly fighting, provoking, and trying to undermine the Virginian. Took Shorty and began to rob/kill other ranchers cattle. killed in a duel with the Virginian
The card dealer in Medicine Bow
Introduces the antagonist. Showcases the difference between Trampas and the VIrginian in terms of 'cowards' always shooting without logic which isn't something the Virginian would do
Engineers wife
A sick woman who quiets the town after things get rowdy. Later the Virginian drops flowers to her to apologize and shows the Virginian has compassion/empathy
Balaam
A horse abuser/maltreater. Ends up buying and later getting Pedro killed. Nearly beaten to death by the Virginian
Mrs. Balaam
A friend/confidant of Molly, inviting her to come teach in the west rath then stay in the east.
Charlie Taylor
A neighboring rancher of Judge henry. Has his own family and lets the main characters know of Molly's arrival. Informs the reader that more people are starting to settle into families
Ms. Taylor
A friend of Molly whos housing Molly as she stays in the west teaching the kids
Judge Henry
A rancher who employs Trampas, the Virginian and Tenderfoot. Most events take place on his property but he himself stauys out of the drama the cowboys fall into. Sets the Virginian up with land of his own as a wedding gift
Mrs. Henry
A kind wife to Judge Henry. Kind to the narrator in covering him when he first arrives and helps the Virginian with his letter writing. Helps the Virginian pick out a ring for Molly
Em'ly
An old rooster on the ranch. Mistakes everything for an egg and wants to be a mother up until the point she actually has to mom. Named after a nanny/caretaker ‘Tenderfoot' had. Died on a tree.
Molly Stark
A refined woman from the east. Comes from old money but its no longer a reliable source. She moves to Bear Creek to get away from her families expectations. Struggles to come to terms that she loves the Virginian while teaching the childern. Marries the Virginian despite what her family thinks. Has a few kids and is very happy
John stark
An ancestor of Molly who was patriotic during the revolution. Its part of the reason why Molly has been suffocated.
Sam Bannett
A suitor option of Molly. Likely to be rich and provide a comfy life for Molly. Marries a wealth women named Ms. Scootzer and are rich together
Ms. Flynt
Minister's wife in Vermont. Somewhat supportive of Mollys choice to work south
Great Aunt
Mollys biggest supporter and only person who got to see the Virginian. Got to meet one of her grandkids
Lin Mclean
Another cowboy on the ranch that took an interest in Molly. Directly sabatoging the men who were interested in Molly untol he was slapped by Molly for kissing her. Later helps swap the babies for the prank at the BBQ. 1 of the 3 best men trying too keep Trampas away
Old Judge Burrage
A judge from Cheyenne, strict on the people
Bokay Baldy
Another cowboy working on the ranch. Bought slippers for Molly but got them stolen by McLean before he could gift them
Shorty
A naive man who lost everything in the east. Foolish and left the ranch with Trampas. Selling Pedro and taught the horse tricks. Killed by Trampas after fleeing from the Virginian
Pedro
A smart horse that knows tricks that belonged to Shorty. Injuried and killed by Balaam
Doctor Alexandria Macbride
A strongly religous man who came to the ranch. Chased out by the Virginian terrorizing him all night and defended the honor of the cowboys hes now the foreman of
Scipio
The newest member on the ranch. Similar to tenderfoot but he knows how shut-up. Good at cooking food. 1 of the 3 best men to keep Trampas away
