Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Cellular Respiration
The metabolic process in which cells convert glucose and oxygen into energy, carbon dioxide, and water.
Mitosis
The process of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells.
Meiosis
The process of cell division that results in four genetically different daughter cells, used for sexual reproduction.
Allele
A variant form of a gene that can exist at a particular genetic locus.
Dominant Trait
A trait that is expressed in the phenotype even when only one copy of the allele is present.
Recessive Trait
A trait that is expressed in the phenotype only when two copies of the allele are present.
Natural Selection
The process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
