1. The Athabasca Glacier in western Canada continues to
shrink every year. What does this tell you about the
local climate?
- temperatures are above freezing
- the rate of snow accumulation is lower than the rate of
melt
Sea level rise is often mentioned as a consequence of
global warming. How can the concepts of this lesson be
applied to this idea?
Global warming causes the temperature of the planet to
increase. This increase in global temperature causes the ice
and snow to begin to melt at the North and South poles (high
latitudes). This water adds to the water in the oceans and
ocean levels are increased around the globe. Global warming
also causes snow and ice at high altitudes to melt and
creates run off. This run-off adds to water levels locally and
world wide.
