What does 'vocabulary in context' mean?
Determining the meaning of a word based on how it’s used in a passage.
What are context clues?
Words or phrases around an unfamiliar word that help define it.
Types of context clues?
Definition, Synonym, Antonym, Example, Inference
Strategy for unknown words?
Read sentence, look around word, replace meaning, check tone.
What does tone help with?
Determining if meaning is positive, negative, or neutral.
What is text structure?
How an author organizes ideas in a passage.
Common text structures?
Cause & Effect, Compare & Contrast, Problem & Solution, Chronological.
Why is text structure important?
Helps understand the author’s logic and main idea.
Signal words for cause & effect?
Because, therefore, as a result.
What is author’s purpose?
The reason the author wrote the text.
3 main purposes?
Inform, Persuade, Entertain.
How to identify purpose?
Look at tone, word choice, and main idea.
What does 'inform' mean?
Provide facts or explain something.
What does 'persuade' mean?
Convince the reader.
What does 'entertain' mean?
Engage or tell a story.
