What is a language sample?
A language sample is a criterion-referenced task used to evaluate a child’s spontaneous or self-generated language in natural contexts.
Why are language samples considered criterion-referenced?
Because the child’s language output is compared to developmental data rather than compared only to a standardized score.
What do language samples evaluate?
They evaluate a person’s natural, spontaneous language skills, including how they use words, sentences, grammar, and communication functions.
Are language samples usually used alone or with other assessments?
They are typically used along with norm-referenced standardized tests.
How long does a language sample usually last?
Usually about 10–15 minutes.
What is the goal number of utterances for a language sample?
