What is meant by the term “executive order”?

  • a directive issued by the president

  • Manage operation of the federal government

  • Have force of law

  • Subject to judicial review

  • Can be overturned by courts.

  • congress can remove a member of federal government

  • Due to misconduct

  • House of reps start process - simple majority

  • Senate then tries to- 2/3 majority needed to convict

  • Example - 1974 congress tried to remove Nixon due to watergate

  • idea of strict separation of political powers

  • Three branches - executive, legislature, judiciary.

  • Aim - to enable each branch to check the powers of each other

- prevent emergence of dictatorial government
