What are some facts about the Amazon river? (size, human influence, population, equator)
Basin size approximately 7 million km squared, human influence as Brazil uses large dams for irrigation and HEP.
Population of basin is 28 million resulting in relatively low density
Majority of the basin lies just below the equator, the source of the amazon is in the Andes mountains so meltwater affects the river regime.
What are some facts about the Amazon river’s rainfall/discharge? (dams, temperature, deforestation)
There are 54 dams on the river, peak rainfall in march around 300 mm, lowest rainfall in august at 50 mm
As temperature increases precipitation decreases, feb temperature was at 26 degrees C and rainfall was around 290 mm yet in October temp was at 27.5 C yet the rainfall was around 100 mm.
There is fairly large amounts of deforestation in the amazon river basin, the deforested areas have much lower annual rainfall of around below 1200 mm
What are some facts about the Yukon river? (population, size, vegetation, what the basin is made up of, environment, human influence)
Basin size 850,000 km squared
177,000 miles square of need leaf forest
Population of 126,000
Majority of the basin is discontinuous permafrost
Mountainous climates with tundra and taiga, very large seasonable variability.
Little human influence as most landscape is wilderness, some HEP use for mining industries.
Permafrost- permanently frozen ground
What are some facts about the Yukon river in terms of rainfall/discharge in the summer months?
July and August have the highest precipitation at 40 mm and the highest temp of 14 degrees
What are some facts about the Murray Darling river?(size, dams, agriculture, evapotranspiration/ rivers)
Basin size is 1 million km squared
150 dams on the river
80-90% of surface run off water is used for agriculture
42% of surface run off water is diverted from rivers, potential evapotranspiration is 1174 mm
What are some facts about the Murray Darling river in terms of rainfall/discharge?
Day temp is 25 degrees in January and 9 degrees in July
annual rainfall is 470 mm, human influence as waters are drawn by Australia’s main cities and farms for irrigation
May experiences the least rainfall, below average,
