Polar
A molecule with slightly positive and negative ends (like a magnet)
Polar Molecules
Molecules that have uneven sharing of electrons, giving them “charged” ends. They mix well with other polar things (like water)
Nonpolar
Molecules with evenly shared electrons, so no charged ends. They don’t mix with water (like oil)
Universal Solvent
A nickname for water because it can dissolve many substances
Solute
The substance that gets dissolved (like sugar in tea)
Solvent
The substance that does the dissolving (like the water in tea)
Soluble
A substance that can dissolve in a solvent
Insoluble
A substance that cannot dissolve in a solvent
Electrolytes
Substances that dissolve in water and conduct electricity (like salt)
Nonelectrolytes
Substances that dissolve in water but don’t conduct electricity (like sugar)
Concentrated
A solution with a lot of solute in the solvent
Dilute
A solution with a little solute in the solvent
