Taxonomy
The branch of science dealing with identification, nomenclature and classification of organisms.
First step in taxonomy
The description of the organism.
ICBN
International Code for Botanical Nomenclature.
Founder of binomial nomenclature
Carolus Linnaeus (C. Linnaeus).
Scientific nomenclature
The naming of a particular organism by the same name all over the world to avoid confusion.
Latin
The language from which most names in biological nomenclature are taken because it is a dead language.
Generic epithet
The first word of an organism's biological name representing the genus, which starts with a capital letter.
Specific epithet
The second word of an organism's biological name representing the species, which starts with a small letter.
Printing and writing rules for biological names
Biological names are generally in Latin and written in italics; when handwritten, they are separately underlined.
Letter "L." in scientific names
A suffix (such as in Ficus benghalensis L.) that signifies the taxonomist Linnaeus.
Organisation levels in living beings
Atomic → Molecular → Subcellular → Cellular → Tissue → Organ system → Individual.
