PRE-TRIP INSPECTION

IN VEHICLE/ENGINE START

Turn the key halfway. (Without starting the bus.) I will wait for my gauges to settle and lights to clear on the dash before starting my bus. ABS and DEF lights came on and off.

(START THE BUS)

Air Brakes (CHOCK TIRE)

Pump brakes to drop pressure to 90 psi.

1. I will wait for my air pressure to build up til my governor cuts out between 120 to 140 psi. (Identify the cutoff pressure)

2. Turn bus off, Turn the key halfway, put foot on the service brake and release the parking brake. I should lose no more than 3psi in one minute, (60 turn signal out loud or ask examiner to keep time) I did not lose no more than 3psi in one minute.

3. I will pump my brakes, and the buzzer and light alarm comes on or before 55 psi. (Identify the exact number)

4. I will continue pumping my brakes until my parking brake pops out between 20 and 45 psi. (Identify the exact number) I will restart the bus and allow my air pressure to build until my governor cuts out between 120 and 140 psi. (REMOVE CHOCK)

Parking Brake Check

I will put my bus into drive with parking brake on and rev the rpms up to 12 rpms two times to ensure my parking brakes is holding. My parking brake is holding.

Service Brake Check

I will put my bus into drive and make two 5 mph stops to make sure my service brake is working properly, and the bus is not pulling to the left or the right.

Lighting Indicators

(Turn on headlights) (Do each light and state they are working on the dash)

Headlights high beams

Left turn signal

Right turn signal

Passenger/School Bus Section

Yellow Amber 8 ways work on the panel

Windshield and Traffic Monitoring Device/Passenger Monitoring

My windshield is clean, secure, not damaged, no obstructions, and my 2 inspection stickers are up to date.

My flat, convex, crossover and passenger mirrors are properly adjusted for me, clean, secure, and not damaged.

My cameras are clean, secure, not damaged, and properly working.

Wipers and Washer

Turn on the wiper and washer fluid. Wipers and Washer work, blades are secure, not damaged, and flush to the windshield.

Heaters and Defroster

Turn on each heater individually on low and high and defroster on low, medium, and high. Heaters and defrosters work properly. (check defroster with hand at dash)

Horn

Blow horn, horn is properly working

Emergency Equipment (Get out seat)

3 red reflective triangles secure

Fire extinguisher is secure and fully charged

My mechanics have my spare fuses

First aid kit is secure and tagged, indicating it is full

Body fluid kit is secure and tagged, indicating it is full

Handrails secure, not damaged

Steps and tread secure and not damaged

Passenger and School bus only

Seats-seat cushions are not damaged. The seat is secure to the frame and the frame is secure to the floor. (I would check all the seats the same)

Emergency Exits

I have 4 emergency windows they are properly labeled, not damaged, open and close freely, and alarm sounds. (check one and say I will check the other 3 the same)

Emergency door is properly labeled, not damaged, open and close freely, and alarm sound.

Roof Hatch is properly labeled, not damaged, seals are intact, and I can see my strobe light is working and not damaged. I would check the other one the same way

Let tester back in bus, turn off headlights, shutdown the bus, and put key in accessory position go to the back of the bus push child check button and remove bus sign from window. Take key out the ignition, take with you and use 3 points of contact while exiting the bus.)

All lights are clean, proper color, not cracked, broken, missing. Crossing arms opens and closes freely, is not damaged.

Flat, convex, and crossover mirrors are clean, not cracked, not broken, and brackets are not bent (Do both sides the same)

OPEN HOOD

Fluid Levels

Power Steering and coolant fluid are at the proper level (point to the reservoir)

Oil, I would check with the engine off, pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, stick it back in and make sure it's between add and full.

Fluid and Air Leaks

(Check all hoses and wires, look on ground for leaks, listen for air leaks.)

I do not see any fluid leaks or hear any air leaks.

Steering System (point to each item)

Steering Shaft, Steering gear box, steering hoses, steering linkage, and tie rod securely mounted, not damaged, cracked, or worn, not leaking, no missing nuts, bolts, and cotter keys.

Springs/Mounts/Shocks

Leaf springs are not damaged, shifted, cracked, or broken

Spring Mounts are secure, not damaged, cracked, or broken

Shocks are secure, not damaged, not leaking

Brakes Hoses

Brakes hoses are not cracked, worn, damaged, or leaking

Brakes drum and lining are free from contaminants, oils and debris

Steering Axles

Tire walls have no abrasions bubble or cuts. Front tire can’t no be re-cap

Tire should be 105 psi, I would check that with a tire pressure gauge

Tread depth should be no less than 4/32 of an inch, I would check that with a tread depth gauge

Valve stems are secure, cap is on, not leaking

Rims

The rims are not damaged, cracked, or bent. Rims do not have any illegal weld or elongated holes

All lug nuts and studs are present. None are missing or loose. There are no signs of rust trails or shinny thread. (Close hood)

Side of Vehicle

Lenses and reflectors

Student door light

All lights are clean, proper color, not cracked, broken, or missing. All reflective tape and reflective circles are clean, proper color, and secure

Fuel Tank and Def Tank

Door closed, cap is on/not damaged

Frame and floor show no sign of damage, cracks, welds, or holes to the frame floor, or crossmember

Student Loading/Unloading

Master Switch ON

1. Activate my amber lights at 150-300 feet before the stop

2. I will check my mirrors to make sure traffic sees me

3. I will completely stop, pull my parking brake, bus in neutral, and keep my foot on the service brake

4. I will check my mirrors for traffic

5. I will open my door to activate my red lights

6. I will check my mirrors to make sure traffic has stopped

7. I will signal the students to board the bus (LOADING)

I will allow the students to leave the bus (UNLOADING)

8. I will make sure all students are seated (LOADING)

I will count my students away and make sure they reach a safe

place 10 feet away from the bus (UNLOADING)

Crossers will wait for my signal to cross 10 feet in front of the bus (UNLOADING)

9. I will check my mirrors to make sure no students are running back to the bus

10. I will check that students are all seated

11. I will close the door, put the bus in gear, release the brake, check my mirrors, and when its safe proceed to the next stop.

Railroad Crossings

1. I am approaching a railroad crossing

2. 100 feet from the tracks I will activate my 4-ways

3. Check my mirrors

4. I will ask for silence, turn off my master switch, and all noise making machines

5. I will stop 15 to 50 feet before the tracks

6. Pull my parking brake

7. Put my bus in neutral

8. Check my mirrors, open my door and window

9. I will look and listen left, right, left again, check my mirrors again for passing cars, I will check that I have the length of my bus plus 15 feet clear

10. If there is no train I will close my door

11. I will put my bus in gear and release the parking brake

12. When it is safe I will cross the tracks without stopping

13. 100 feet after the tracks I will turn off my 4-ways

Loadind unloading/railroad crossing

Emergency Break Down

I will tap my brakes twice to alert traffic behind me

I will find a safe place to pull over

I will put on my right turn signal and check my mirrors for traffic

I will pull my parking brake and put my bus in neutral

I will turn on my 4-ways

I will turn my wheels to prevent rolling (Left if I'm uphill and right if I'm downhill)

I will radio dispatch my situation and location and wait for instructions

If non-life threatening emergency (NO KIDS ONBOARD)

Turn off the bus and child check

Take the keys with me

Put out the triangles (If told by dispatch)

Life threatening emergency

Take the keys

Evacuate the bus

Count the students seat by seat off the bus

Have the students go 100 feet away from the bus

Check to make sure all students are off the bus

Count again at the meeting point

Count again if loaded on a new vehicle

After the problem is solved...

I will turn off my 4-ways

I will put my left turn signal on

Check my mirrors for traffic and tail swing.

Put bus in drive and release brake

Check mirrors again

Proceed
