What is an acute injury?
Sudden onset, usually from a specific incident
What is a chronic injury?
Gradual onset, develop over time through repetitive stress
What are the main acute injuries?
- Fractures - Dislocations - Strains - Sprains
What are the main chronic injuries?
- Achilles tendonitis - Stress fracture - Tennis elbow
What is a fracture?
A break or crack in a bone caused by excessive force or impact
What are the types of fractures?
- Simple - Compound - Stress - Greenstick
What is a simple fracture?
The bone breaks but doesn't pierce the skin
What is a compound fracture?
Bone breaks through the skin
What is a greenstick fracture?
Incomplete fracture, common in children
What are some common causes of fractures?
- Direct impact - Falls - Collision Sports - Overuse
What are some symptoms of a fracture?
- Pain - swelling - deformity - inability to bear weight
What is a dislocation?
Complete displacement of bones at a joint, disrupting normal joint structure
Where are some common sites of dislocations?
- Shoulder - fingers - knee - hip - elbow
What is a strain?
Injury to your muscle fibres or tendons
What is the grading system for a strain?
Grade 1: Mild stretching, few fibres torn
Grade 2: Moderate tearing, partial muscle rupture
Grade 3: Complete rupture of muscle / tendon
Where are common sites for strains?
- Hamstrings - Quadriceps - calf - Lower back
