Cardiovascular System
The system composed of the heart and blood vessels that facilitates the transport of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste.
Functions of the Cardiovascular System
Includes oxygen and nutrient delivery, waste removal, hormone transport, thermoregulation, and immune function.
Deoxygenated Blood
Blood that has low oxygen content and is carried to the heart via the vena cava.
Double Circulation
The process where blood passes twice through the heart, enabling efficient oxygenation and distribution throughout the body.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
A leading cause of death globally, with lifestyle changes potentially preventing up to 80% of premature cases.
Blood Pressure
The force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, important for overall heart health.
Immediate Effects of Exercise
Include increased oxygen demand, heart rate, breathing rate, and blood flow to muscles, as well as decreased flow to digestive organs.
Long-term Effects of Exercise
Strengthens the heart, improves blood supply, and promotes efficiency in oxygen delivery and muscle performance.
Training Heart Rate
Calculated as maximum HR (220 - age), indicating the intensity level at which one should train for cardiovascular fitness.
