Anatomic Position
The patient standing erect, facing forward, arms extended with palms out and heels together with toes pointing forward.
Anterior
Referring to the forward or front part of the body.
Superior
Referring to a position above or nearer to the head.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body or part into right and left sides.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body or part into upper and lower portions.
Coronal Plane
Divides the body or part into anterior and posterior portions.
Abduction
Movement of a part away from the body.
Flexion
Bending of a limb or joint.
Extension
Straightening of a joint.
Osteology
The study of bones.
Axial Skeleton
Comprises 80 bones including the skull, vertebral column, and thorax.
Appendicular Skeleton
Comprises 126 bones including the limbs and girdles.
Synarthroses
Type of joint that is immovable.
Diarthroses
Type of joint that is freely movable.
Fracture
A break in the continuity of a bone.
Simple Fracture
Fracture that does not pierce the skin.
Projection (Radiology)
Path of the central ray as it exits the x-ray tube through the patient.
Source to Image Distance (SID)
Distance between the source of radiation and the image receptor.
Asthenic Body Habitus
Refers to a very skinny body type.
