Over the needle catheter

• catheter is mounted over the needle

• used for surgeries and is short term (1-3 days )

• typically used in a peripheral vessel (cephalic or saphenous vein)

Through the needle catheter

• longer, usually a jugular vein

• long term use (> 3 days)

• used for extended fluid therapy and systemic blood pressure monitoring

Butterfly catheter

• plastic set of wings below the hub to help with gripping

• not intended to remain in patient not being directly monitored

• used for medication administration and blood draws
