Over the needle catheter
catheter is mounted over the needle
used for surgeries and is short term (1-3 days )
typically used in a peripheral vessel (cephalic or saphenous vein)

Through the needle catheter
longer, usually a jugular vein
long term use (> 3 days)
used for extended fluid therapy and systemic blood pressure monitoring

Butterfly catheter
plastic set of wings below the hub to help with gripping
not intended to remain in patient not being directly monitored
used for medication administration and blood draws
