New cards

explain the link between older drivers and eye sight tests

this consultation is seeking views on potentially moving away from the current system of self-declaration for eyesight standards for drivers aged 70 and over and introducing mandatory eyesight tests for older drivers as part of the driving licence renewal process

2
New cards

describe the 2 groups of drivers according to GB medical standards

  • Group 1 - ordinary driving lisences - cars and motorcycles

  • Group 2 - includes large lorries (category C) and buses and minibuses (category D)

  • In most cases, the medical standards for Group 2 drivers are substantially higher than for Group 1 drivers - because of the size and weight of the vehicle and the length of time an occupational driver typically spends at the wheel.

3
New cards

explain applying for a group 1 driving lisence in regards to eye sight (4)

  • Obtaining or renewing a Group 1 standard car licence does not require an eye examination

  • Onus on the individual to report any ocular or medical conditions that may affect the fitness to drive

  • For some common conditions for example cataract the DVLA need not be informed provided vision standards are still met.

  • Other condition such glaucoma macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy do not require notification if only one eye is affected though progression to the second eye eye does require notification.

4
New cards

state the eye sight requirements (including drivers aided by prescribed glasses or contact lenses) for ALL licensed drivers ()
