New cards

what equipment is needed for the practical?

2 metal clamps, 2 bosses, clamp stand, meter rule, spring

2
New cards

what condition the equipment needs to be in?

spring is at the top of the 0 point on the rule

metal rule has to be vertical

3
New cards

what and where the wooden splint is

wooden split is attached to the bottom of the spring as a pointer and it’s horizontal

4
New cards

what is the method for this practical?

read off where the pointer is at 0

this is the unstretched length of the spring which is the length when no force is applied

add a weight of 1N to the bottom of the spring and measure extension while reading of the pointer

keep adding weights of 1N onto the spring and reading and measuring it’s extension

5
New cards

how to find extension of a spring?

take away the unstretched length from each extension reading

6
New cards

describe this graph

describe this graph

extension is directly proportional to the weight

linear relationship

goes through 0

spring is elastic because if weight is removed the extension goes to zero

7
New cards

how to find the weight of a mysterious object

draw a tangent from the extension to the weight

8
New cards

describe this graph

describe this graph

same experiment but stretching of a rubber band

non-linear relationship

9
New cards

describe this graph

describe this graph

too much weight was added

limit of proportionality was exceeded

non-linear relationship

spring is inelastically deformed

10
New cards

what isinelastic deformation?

all weight is taken away spring remains deformed

11
New cards

how to calculate spring constant

using the linear part of the graph
