Asperger's Syndrome
A developmental disorder affecting the ability to effectively socialize and communicate.
Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task
A psychological test used to measure the ability to understand emotions by interpreting facial expressions, particularly in the eyes.
Theory of the Mind
The ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires—to oneself and others and to understand that others have beliefs, desires, and intentions that differ from one's own.
Lab Experiment
A controlled experiment conducted in a laboratory setting, allowing for high levels of control over variables.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated by the researcher, in this case, the type of participant (AS/HFA vs. control groups).
Dependent Variables
The outcomes measured in the study, including scores on the Eye Test and the Autism Quotient (AQ) Test.
Significant Difference
A statistically meaningful difference, indicating that the results are unlikely to have occurred by chance.
Sex Differences
Variations in performance or behavior based on gender, explored in this study between male and female participants.
Ceiling Effect
A situation where a test is too easy, resulting in most participants achieving high scores, thus not accurately reflecting individual differences.
Informed Consent
A process to ensure participants are fully aware of the study's aims, procedures, risks, and benefits before agreeing to participate.
