What is the name of the microscope we use in lab?
Compound light microscope
How is magnification achieved using a microscope?
Magnification is achieved through two lens system that bends light rays to make them appear larger
Define ocular lens
The lenses that you look through and they provide 10x magnification. They can be adjusted for the distance between your eyes.
Define Objective lens
This is the 4x, 10x, 40x, and the 100x lens
4x is called"?
Scanning power
This is the lens furthest from the slide
40x total magnification
It has the largest field of view and the smallest image
10x is called?
Low power
Lens medium distance to the slide
100x total magnification
It has an intermediate field of view and an intermediate size image
40x is called?
High power
Lens closed to the slide
400x total magnification
This has the smallest field of view and the largest image
100x is called?
Oil immersion
Lens touches oil on slide
1000x magnification
Only used with oil on lens
Define parfocal
Once an object is in focus at low power, it will remain coarse focus when you switch to the higher power objective lens
Define resolution
Clarity of an image and is determined by magnification and the amount of light passing through the condenser
Define field of view
Total amount of specimen that is visible, will decrease any time you magnify an object
What is the importance of the condenser
Lens that forms a cone of light that illuminates the specimen and adjusts contrast
What’s the importance of the iris diaphragm
Controls the amount of light focused on a specimen. This must be changed every time you change magnification
What is the importance of oil immersion
This is used to decrease refraction of light rays by preventing them from coming into contact with the air in between the slide and 100x objective lens
