Methyl Red Test
A pH indicator test for mixed acid fermentation, shown by a red color change.
Durham Tube
A small inverted tube in culture media that captures gas produced during fermentation.
Phenol Red Broth
A broth used to detect carbohydrate fermentation, indicated by a color change to yellow.
VP Test (Voges-Proskauer Test)
A test that detects acetoin produced during fermentation, indicated by a red color.
Citrate Test
A test that determines if an organism can utilize citrate as its sole carbon source.
Growth on Slant
Presence of bacterial growth on the slanted surface of a tube, indicating the organism’s viability.
Gas Production
The formation of gas observed in the Durham Tube during fermentation tests.
Mixed Acid Fermentation
Fermentation that produces multiple acids, including lactic and acetic acid among others.
Catalase Test
A rapid test that identifies organisms that produce the enzyme catalase by bubbling in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.
Antiseptic Test
Tests how effective different antiseptics are against bacteria by measuring growth inhibition.
