Joint

Connection between two bones

Functions of joints

Allow motion
Bear body weight
Provide stability
Lubricate joint

Fibrous joint

Thin layer of periosteum between the two bones

Synarthrosis

Suture joint, formed to interlock openings (found in the skull sutures)

Syndesmosis

Ligamentous joint with large amounts of fibrous tissue that hold joint together

Gomphosis

Tooth and the wall of the socket

Cartilaginous

Hyaline or fibrocartilage between surfaces (Spinal joints)

Synovial (Diarthrodial) Joint

No direct connection to bone ends.
Cavity is filled with synovial fluid
Outer layer is fibrous tissue, inner layer secretes fluid

Nonaxial joints

Linear movement in which flat surfaces of the bone glide over each other.

Unilaxial

Angular motion that revolves around one plane on one axis of motion

Elbow

Biaxial joint

Wrist
Moves in two different directions (Flex/Ext; Radial/Ulnar deviation)

Triaxial (Multiaxial) Joint

Active motion in all three axes- All are ball-and-socket joints.
