Layer 1
Physical Layer: Transmits raw bit streams over the physical medium (cables, hubs, repeaters). Data unit: Bits.
Layer 2
Data Link Layer: Node-to-node data transfer, error detection, and physical addressing via MAC addresses (switches, bridges). Data unit: Frames.
Layer 3
Network Layer: Routes data between different networks using logical IP addresses (routers). Data unit: Packets.
Layer 4
Transport Layer: Ensures reliable, end-to-end data delivery, flow control, and error recovery (TCP/UDP). Data unit: Segments.
Layer 5
Session Layer: Establishes, maintains, and terminates communication sessions between applications.
Layer 6
Presentation Layer: Translates, encrypts, and compresses data so it can be understood by the application layer.
