Haitian Revolution
A successful anti-slavery and anti-colonial insurrection by self-liberated slaves against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, leading to Haiti's independence in 1804.
Independence
The condition of a nation, country, or state which exercises self-government, and typically sovereignty, over its territory.
Reparations
Compensation demanded by France from Haiti, amounting to 150 million francs, in exchange for recognizing Haiti's independence.
Embargo
A governmental order that restricts commerce or exchange with specific countries or groups.

The leader who declared Haiti's independence and became the country's first emperor after the revolution.
