Christopher Columbus
An Italian explorer sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain in 1492 to find a Western water passage to the spice islands of Asia. He landed in the West Indies of the Americas and “discovered” the Western Hemisphere. His voyage started the Colombian Exchange
Bartolomé De Las Casas
A Spanish Priest, he opposed Spain’s brutal treatment of the Native Americans through the Encomienda System. He said Native Americans were fully human and deserved God’s grace as much as Europeans. He also suggested the use of African American slaves rather than Native Americans though he later repented this
John Smith
The military leader of Jamestown, established in 1607, John Smith was instrumental in the colony's survival. His strong leadership, including the rule of 'no work, no food,' helped organize settlers and foster trade with Native Americans. Smith's explorations contributed to the understanding of the Chesapeake Bay area.
John Winthrop
The Puritan leader of Massachusetts, known for his sermon 'A Model of Christian Charity' where he described the colony as a 'city upon a hill,' representing a model society built on Puritan principles
Roger Williams
He was banished from Massachusetts for dissenting from Puritan views and ended up founding the colony of Rhode Island in the New England region of America.
Anne Hutchinson
Puritan leaders saw her as a big threat to their religion and Massachusetts, as a whole, as she believed in Antinomian (which is the belief that you don’t have to follow laws or moral norms). She was then exiled from Massachusetts and also went to Rhode Island.
Benjamin Franklin
One of the most influential Founding Fathers, Franklin was a main supporter of independence during the lead up to the Revolutionary War. He proposed the “Albany Plan” which called for colonial unity during the French and Indian/Seven Years War (He drew the “Join or Die” snake cartoon), he led the effort the repeal the Stamp Act, and published “Poor Richard’s Almanac.” Franklin was also an ambassador to France as he was instrumental in gaining French support doing the Revolutionary war. He is the only Founding Father to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris in 1783, and the Constitution. He was also the most prominent figure in the American Enlightenment, having invented the lighting rod, bifocals, and charted and named the “Gulf Stream”.
