What’s the word equation for when copper carbonate is heated?
CuCO³ —> CuO + CO²
Why does the mass decrease when copper carbonate is heated?
The gas (carbon dioxide) escaped since there was no lid left on the boiling tube. Leaving copper oxide behind.
What is the apparatus needed for this experiment?
eye protection
Heating apparatus (Bunsen burner + heat proof mat)
Clamp, boss and stand
Boiling tube
Spatula
Electronic balance
Copper carbonate
What is the method for this experiment?
Measure the mass of the boiling tube (record)
Add three spatulas of copper carbonate into the boiling tube
Measure mass of the boiling tube again (record)
Clamp the top of the boiling tube
Heat gently using a medium flame for 2 minutes
Then use a roaring flame
Stop hearing when the copper carbonate has changed colour
Turn off the Bunsen burner and let everything cool for 10 mins.
Measure the mass of the boiling tube and product. Record this into a table.
What is the word equation?
Copper carbonate —> copper oxide + carbon dioxide
