Why does the mass decrease when copper carbonate is heated?

The gas (carbon dioxide) escaped since there was no lid left on the boiling tube. Leaving copper oxide behind.

  • Heating apparatus (Bunsen burner + heat proof mat)

  • Clamp, boss and stand

What is the method for this experiment?

  1. Measure the mass of the boiling tube (record)

  2. Add three spatulas of copper carbonate into the boiling tube

  3. Measure mass of the boiling tube again (record)

  4. Clamp the top of the boiling tube

  5. Heat gently using a medium flame for 2 minutes

  6. Then use a roaring flame

  7. Stop hearing when the copper carbonate has changed colour

  8. Turn off the Bunsen burner and let everything cool for 10 mins.

  9. Measure the mass of the boiling tube and product. Record this into a table.
