Elastin fibers
Fibers that are easily stretched, increasing lung inflation ease and aiding in recoil during expiration.
Lung fibrosis
A condition where elastin fibers are replaced with scar tissue, causing the lungs to become stiff and noncompliant.
Collagen fibers
Fibers that provide strength and structure to lung tissue, resisting stretching.
Balance of elastin and collagen
The combination of elastin and collagen in lung tissue provides flexibility and strength, preventing over-expansion.
Function of collagen in lungs
Prevents lung over-expansion and ensures lungs maintain their shape during exhalation.
