Abstract
Describes an artistic treatment of a subject that is not representational or
based on external reality or nature, objects, but explores and portrays it in
a way that does not directly reflect how it looks.
Abstract Expressionism
Describes an art historical term specific to a group of painters working in
New York after the Second World War. The group of artists included
Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Their primary approach to
painting was gestural, and “all over,” a condition in which no single part
of the work is visually predominant.
Aesthetics
The study of principles, visual qualities and appreciation of beauty or good
taste. the branch of philosophy that concerns itself with the definition of
beauty and with considerations of the purposes and value of art.
Appropriation
The intentional use, copying and alteration of pre-existing objects or
images and ideas with little or no transformation applied to them.
Arts and Crafts movement
Informal movement in design and architecture that championed the unity
of the arts, the experience of the individual craftsperson, and the qualities
of materials and construction in the work itself. Emphasis was placed on
simple, functional forms and the use of local materials and time-tested
traditions of construction.
Assemblage
Three-dimensional work of art made from combinations of materials
including found objects or non-traditional art materials.
Art Criticism
An informed discourse about an art piece. The analysis and evaluation of
works of art
Atmospheric Perspective
Using colour to simulate the illusion of space.
Composition
The arrangement of the individual elements within a work of art so as to
form a unified whole; a complete work of art or design, seen in total, not
as individual visual elements.
Comprehensive design or Comps
The final rendering of a graphic idea, short for comprehensive.
Creative Disruption
A break in the pattern of how things are usually done.
Critical Analysis
A detailed examination of an artwork or design that give opinions, make
judgements and draw conclusions.
