Medical Terminology

Anatomical Terms
Terms used to describe the location and structure of body parts.
Integumentary System
The system that includes the skin, hair, nails, and related glands.
Skeletal System
The system that comprises all the bones in the body.
Muscular System
The system that enables movement through the contraction of muscles.
Nervous System
The system that transmits signals between different parts of the body.
Cardiovascular System
The system that circulates blood and lymph through the body.
Digestive System
The system responsible for processing food and absorbing nutrients.
Urinary System
The system responsible for filtering and expelling waste from the body via urine.
Reproductive System
The system involved in producing offspring.
Prefixes
Word elements added to the beginning of a root word to modify its meaning.
Suffixes
Word elements added to the end of a root word to modify its meaning.
Abbreviations
Shortened forms of words or phrases used in medical terminology.
Elevation
A movement that raises a body part.
Flexion
A bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts.
Dorsiflexion
An upward bending of the foot at the ankle.
Abduction
Movement away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
Movement toward the midline of the body.
Tachycardia
A rapid heart rate, usually over 100 beats per minute.
Hypertension
High blood pressure.
Hypoglycemia
Low levels of sugar in the blood.
Anemia
A condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells.
Apnea
Temporary cessation of breathing.
Biopsy
A procedure to remove tissue for examination.
Epidemiology
The study of how diseases affect the health and illness of populations.
Pathology
The study of diseases.
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
A record of the electrical activity of the heart.
Immunology
The study of the immune system.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of stable internal conditions in the body.
Respiration
The process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
