Orbit
The cavity in the skull that contains the eyeball and associated structures.
Aditus Orbitae
The anterior opening of the orbit serving as the entrance to the orbital cavity.
Margo Orbitalis
The orbital margin, the border of the orbit comprised of multiple bones.
Optic Canal
An opening in the skull that allows the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery to enter the orbit.
Sclera
The white part of the eyeball, contributing to its shape and providing protection.
Cornea
The transparent front part of the eye that refracts light and provides most of the eye's optical power.
Lens
A clear, flexible structure in the eye that helps focus light onto the retina.
Iris
The colored part of the eye that regulates the amount of light entering through the pupil.
Retina
The innermost layer of the eyeball responsible for converting light into electrical signals.
Lacrimal Apparatus
The system of glands and ducts that produce and drain tears from the eye.
Extrinsic Eye Muscles
Six muscles associated with the eyeball that control its movements.
Aqueous Humor
The clear fluid in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye that maintains intraocular pressure.
Macula Lutea
An area on the retina responsible for central vision and high visual acuity.
Fovea Centralis
The central pit in the macula lutea containing a high density of cone cells for sharp vision.
Optic Nerve (CN II)
The nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
Tarsal Glands
Glands in the eyelids that secrete oils to lubricate the eye.
Conjunctiva
A thin, transparent tissue that covers the front of the eye and lines the eyelids.
Palpebrae
The eyelids that protect the eye, distribute tears, and enhance vision.
Tenon's Capsule
A fibrous layer that encloses the eye and separates it from the surrounding orbit.
Optical Fissure
A gap between the bones of the orbit through which nerves and blood vessels enter the orbit.
Visual Pathway
The pathway that visual information follows from the retina to the visual cortex of the brain.
