Tyramine
An amino acid found in foods such as bananas, avocados, aged cheese, pepperoni, salami, red wine, and chocolate; can cause hypertensive crisis when consumed with MAOIs.
MAOI
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors; a class of medication used to treat depression that interacts with tyramine-rich foods leading to hypertensive crises.
Hypertensive crisis
A severe increase in blood pressure that can lead to stroke; can occur when MAOIs are taken with tyramine-rich foods.
Grapefruit juice
