Estimate
Approximation, projection or prediction of a quantity of work; a statement of the approximate cost of work to be done.
Quantity Survey
Detailed calculation of all components necessary to construct a building, including a listing of all items of materials and equipment.
Bill of Materials
A description of the materials and subcomponents needed to manufacture a finished product.
User-unit Method
Estimating method that involves quantifying space based on the number of users or occupants.
Area Method
Costing and quantification using area and a multiplier; commonly used for rough project cost estimates.
Volume Method
Estimating method that includes the three-dimensional aspect of a project by factoring height into the cost.
Parametric Method
Estimation method that identifies major factors in estimating costs, with corresponding percentage costs.
Modular Cost Method
Estimation approach for repetitive work where total cost is based on unit cost and the number of units.
Detailed Estimate by Quantity Take-off Method
The most precise estimating method, quantifying materials based on specifications.
Combination Method
Uses multiple estimating methods when project details are incomplete or unclear.
Excavation Volume Formula
Vexcavation = length x width x depth of the excavation to calculate total soil volume.
Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU)
A standard building block made of concrete, used in construction for walls.
Mortar Volume per Block
Measurement of mortar required for filling the space around blocks in masonry construction.
Rebars
Reinforcing bars used in concrete construction to add tensile strength.
Board Measure
A unit of measurement for lumber equal to the volume of a piece that measures 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 inch.
Painting Estimate
Calculation of the quantity of paint required for walls based on area and coverage.
Roofing Estimate
Calculation of the number of sheets of roofing material needed based on the area to be covered.
Formworks
Temporary structures used to support concrete until it sets.
Time Required for Formworks Removal
Guidelines for how long after pouring concrete formworks should be left in place.
