High melting and boiling points
Ionic compounds have strong electrostatic attractions between positive and negative ions. A large amount of energy is needed to break these forces.
Conduct electricity when molten or dissolved
When melted or dissolved in water, the ions are free to move and carry electrical charge.
Do not conduct electricity when solid
In a solid ionic lattice, the ions are fixed in position and cannot move to carry charge.
Hard and brittle
The ions are arranged in a crystal lattice. If layers shift, like charges line up and repel, causing the compound to crack.
Usually soluble in water
Water molecules attract and separate the ions from the lattice, allowing them to dissolve.
