Terminal
A place where vehicles, passengers, or goods begin or end a journey.
Baggage allowance
The maximum weight for your bags, typically around 20kilos.
Excess baggage charge
An amount of money you have to pay if your bags are heavier than the baggage allowance.
Departure lounge
A large room in an airport where you can sit before getting on the plane.
Boarding gate
The area where you show your boarding pass and get on the plane.
Duty-free shop
A shop in an airport where you can buy goods at a cheaper price because you do not have to pay tax on them.
Red channel
The area in an airport you walk through if you have something to declare to customs.
Green channel
The area in an airport you walk through if you have nothing to declare to customs.
Banned goods
Goods that you cannot bring into a country, such as drugs, guns, or explosives.
Wake-up call
A telephone call from the hotel that will wake you up at a certain time.
Room service
A hotel service where food and drinks are brought directly to a guest's room.
Tummy bug
An illness in your stomach caused by bacteria.
Chemist’s / Pharmacy
A shop where you can buy medicine.
Prescription
A piece of paper the doctor writes with information about the medicine you need.
Package deal
A holiday that includes everything: the flight, hotel, meals, etc.
Stop-over
Stopping in a place during your journey and staying there for one or two nights.
Exchange rate
The rate at which one currency can be exchanged for another.
F/B (Full board)
A hotel stay that includes a bed with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
H/B (Half board)
A hotel stay that includes a bed with breakfast and either lunch or dinner.
Set menu
A fixed price for a starter, main course, and dessert with a limited choice of options.
Single ticket
A ticket that allows you to go on one journey to a destination without returning.
Return ticket
A ticket that allows you to go to a place and return from there.
Insurance policy
A formal agreement with an insurance company where you pay money to receive compensation if you are robbed, injured, or lose something.
Matinee performance
A time when a play, musical, or film is shown in the afternoon (typically between 2pm and 6pm).
Off-peak ticket
A cheap ticket for a train at a quiet time, specifically not when people are traveling to or from work.
Bouncer
A type of security guard located at the door of a nightclub.
Unlimited mileage
A rental agreement feature where you can travel as far as you like without being charged for the distance.
The excess (Rental)
A limited amount of money you must pay for repairs if you have an accident in a rented vehicle, such as 200pounds.
