define homeostasis
the maintenance of a constant internal environment
what are the important factors that are maintained for mammalian homeostasis
1) temp
2) water potential
3) conc of glucose m
4) blood pH
5) conc of metabolic waste substances
what can happen when temp, water potential and conc of glucose
1) very low temp; metabolic reactions slow down, proteins will get denatured if temp is too high
2) when water potential is too high: water can enter the cells and burst, when water too low: metabolic reactions can slow down or stop
3) conc of glucose too low: lack of glucose causes respiration to slow/stop, depriving cell of energy source, too much glucose: water leaves cell, disturbing metabolism
