Acid
A substance where the first element is H.
Base
A substance that ends in OH.
Coefficient
A whole number placed in front of a formula.
Combustion Reaction
A reaction following the pattern CxHy+O2→CO2+H2O.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction where a compound breaks down, following the pattern AB→A+B.
Double Replacement
A reaction where elements in two compounds swap, following the pattern AB+CD→AD+CB.
Endothermic
A process that absorbs heat from its surroundings.
Exothermic
A process that releases heat to its surroundings.
Half-life
The time it takes for half of a sample to decay.
Neutron
A subatomic particle with no charge.
Nucleus
The center of an atom.
Proton
A subatomic particle with a positive charge.
Saturated Solution
A solution containing the maximum amount of solute dissolved.
Single Replacement
A reaction following the pattern AB+C→AC+B.
Solute
The substance being dissolved; usually the smaller amount.
Solvent
The substance in which the solute is being dissolved; usually the larger amount.
Supersaturated Solution
A solution that contains more than the maximum amount of solute that the solvent can theoretically dissolve.
Synthesis Reaction
A reaction where multiple reactants combine to form one product, following the pattern A+B→AB.
Unsaturated Solution
A solution containing less than the maximum amount of solute.
