Socialization
A function of the school that involves integrating individuals into the community and culture.
Social Placement
A social function of the school that assists in the categorization and positioning of individuals within a societal structure.
Transformative learning
An orientation which holds that the way learners interpret and reinterpret their sense experience is central to making meaning and hence learning, as defined by Mezirow.
Jack Mezirow
Recognized as the founder of transformative learning theory, who initially studied adult women returning to school.
Instrumental learning
A focus of transformative learning that centers on task-oriented problem solving and the evaluation of cause and effect relationships.
Communicative learning
A focus of transformative learning that centers on how people communicate their feelings, needs, and desires.
Meaning schemes or meaning structures
Predispositions and assumptions that set the stage for a learner's expectations; they consist of concepts, beliefs, judgments, and feelings.
Disorienting dilemma
The first phase of transformational learning where a learner finds that what they thought or believed in the past may not be accurate.
Self-examination
The phase where students think about their past experiences and how they connect to a disorienting dilemma, often creating a perspective transformation.
Critical assessment of assumptions
A phase in which students take a comprehensive and critical look at their past assumptions and accept that some may have been wrong.
Planning a course of action
The stage where students consider what kinds of learning they will now need to fully understand a problem and develop a strategy for seeing new perspectives.
Acquisition of knowledge or skills to carry out new plan
The phase where real learning happens as students carry out their plan and consider different perspectives to enhance their understanding.
Exploring and trying new roles
A part of transformative learning that involves actively working to understand and experience new things through action.
Building self-efficacy in new roles and relationships
The final transformative phase involving building confidence in one's own decisions, beliefs, and understanding.
Transformative Peace
A mission-based consultancy focused on conflict resolution, preventing violent extremism, and building inclusive peace processes.
Dignity (Perspective 1)
A quality of the way we treat others, referring to the behavior and actions directed towards another person.
Dignity (Perspective 2)
A quality of a person’s 'inner-self' related to psychological needs for self-respect, self-esteem, and self-worth.
Dignity of the Human Being
A type of dignity based on the principle of 'humanity' and the 'universal worth' and 'inalienable rights' of human beings.
Dignity of Personal Identity
Form of dignity related to personal feelings of self-respect and self-image, which serves as a basis for relationships.
Dignity of Merit
A type of dignity related to an older person’s status, honors, and significant lifetime achievements.
Dignity of Moral Status
A variation of dignity of merit where personal status is derived from how an individual is perceived and respected by others in a specific context.
Human Dignity
The fundamental innate worth of a human being, considered the center of the values system associated with social peace.
Respect
A verb and action word describing the honoring, paying attention to, and treating with consideration of peoples' rights, values, and beliefs.
Dignity and Older Europeans (DOE) Project Study (2004)
A project that produced a classification of four 'types of dignity' including Human Being, Personal Identity, Merit, and Moral Status.
UK Human Rights Act (1998)
Legislation that protects rights and freedoms, including the right to life and prohibition of torture, while balancing the rights of individuals against those of the community.
