Ionic bonds
Bonds formed between non-metals and metals through an electron transfer.
Electrical attraction
The force that holds ions with opposite charges together, such as in sodium chloride (NaCl) or potassium chloride (KCl).
Ionic or crystal lattice
The structural formation resulting from ionic bonding.
Cation
A positively charged ion (cat−ion) that participates in the formation of an ionic bond.
Anion
A negatively charged ion (an−i−on) that participates in the formation of an ionic bond.
Electrically neutral
The state of an ionic compound where the number of negative charges is equal to the number of positive charges.
Potassium chloride (KCl)
An ionic compound formed by the bond between a potassium ion (K+) and a chlorine ion (Cl−).
Sodium chloride (NaCl)
A specific example of an ionic compound held together by the electrical attraction of opposite charges.
