What do your cells need in order to produce ATP (energy?)
Oxygen
In what order does the respiratory system go ibn when breathing?
Nasal/oral cavity 👃👄
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea
Primary bronchi
Lungs
Secondary bronchi
Teritary bronchi
Bronchioles
Respiratory bronchioles
Alveolar sacs
Alveoli
What is the purpose of the nasal/oral cavity in breathing?
Humidifies and filters air.
Especially in the nasal cavity where nose hair traps bacteria and other foreign particles whilst the humid air retains moisture (recall: surface area and diffusion)
What is the purpose of the pharynx and larynx?
The pharynx is what is generally known as “the throat”. It helps with breathing and sending food down
The larynx is the voicebox
What is the purpose of the trachea?
Also known as the “windpipe”, it is the main body that holds the lungs on each side, and has rings of cartilage that keeps it open for air and structural support.
What is the primary bronchi?
Large passageways that eventually connect to the lungs from the trachea. Inside they are further evolved into tinier bronchi.
What is the purpose of the lungs?
It is the main organ of breathing, as it holds the bronchioles and - most importantly - alveoli for receiving oxygen and exchanging carbon dioxide.
How many lobes does the right lung have?
3 lobes
How many lobes does the left lung have?
2 lobes. Likely because it has a “notched” area to make space for the heart
After the secondary and teritary bronchi, what comes next and what is their purpose?
The bronchioles. They connect the alveolar sacs and lack cartilage in exchange for smooth muscle (Recall: moisture = efficient gas exchange, surface area, and diffusion)
