Multas per gentes et multa per aequora vectus
advenio has miseras, frater, ad inferias,
Having been carried through many people and many seas, I come to, brother, these wretched offerings of the dead
ut te postremo donarem munere mortis
et mutam nequiquam adloquerer cinerem.
so that I may present you with the final gift of death and address in vain the silent ash
Quandoquidem fortuna mihi tete abstulit ipsum.
Heu miser indigne frater adempte mihi,
since fortune took you yourself away from me.
Alas miserable brother taken away from me undesirably
nunc tamen interea haec, prisco quae more parentum
tradita sunt tristi munere ad inferias,
Now, nevertheless, meanwhile, accept these things which have been handed over by the ancient custom of our parents as a sad duty of the dead
accipe fraterno multum manantia fletu,
atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.
these things dripping much with brotherly tears
and into forever, brother, hello and goodbye
