New cards

para 1

it started small.i didn’t notice it first.

it started with the media - subtle changes in the narrative. quiet shifts in what was okay to say in public. newsreaders talking about protecting family values and politicians wanting to preserve traditional families. they weren’t against us - of course not! they just didn’t want us influencing the children. that’s what they said.

para 2

then the laws began to change too - at first small amendments to our hard won right, talking about protecting public morality and the children. they said it was for their safety. that certain words were dangerous, that they could corrupt and divide us. threaten our harmony. i thought if i kept quiet i’d be safe. so i didn’t speak out. even as others in our community were targeted

para 3

not even a year later, they expanded the law. it was no longer just about children, we were barred completely from “behaving indecently” in public spaces. we were no longer socially, culturally or legally accepted, protected or supported. i couldn’t take it anymore, so i spoke out. i began to organize protests at first in my area and then in major cities. everybody in the community was scared but we felt like we were making a difference. we used our voice to strike against the silence that they tried to force against us.

para 4

and then i was taken in for level trials. i first i fought against the blur, tried to push through the emptiness. but they kept resetting and reassigning me, and soon i didn’t have the words, the voice to even talk about why i was resisting. i had new words to replace the old ones. cleaner words. words that fit neatly into place, that were pure. but the technology wasn’t as effective as it is now. the results weren’t as.. immediate. so i had to be taken in again.
